The Season for Nonviolence is a very good tool to remind us of their witness, and also the large unfinished work we have together in transforming awareness on our planet.”   AGNT has also been privileged to be the convener of three Synthesis Dialogues with His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet.

[3]   8-20-14 TAIRA ST. JOHN. Ph.D., M.F.T. TALKS ABOUT LESSONS OF THE SOUL AS RELATED TO HER OWN LIFE AND THE LIVES OF OTHERS

* Taira St. John, Ph.D., M.F.T., a Lakeport depth psychotherapist and radio host, is the Clinical Director of Clear Lake Counseling Center and Director of Alternatives to Violence.  She has dedicated her life to learning and teaching all she can about body, mind and soul, which she sees as our individual and collective path to knowing ourselves and living fuller and more productive lives.  Uppermost in her work is the continuous choice of love which she sees as all encompassing and available to everyone, accessible through awareness, focus, meditation, prayer and  respect for life in all its forms.  Her methodologies include the study of the unconscious, according to the teachings of Carl Jung, combined with the newest neurological thinking and quantum understanding of energy itself. She focuses her work on brain training  that requires eliminating negative and judgemental thought through practicing principles of unconditional love, compassion, fair play and forgiveness and the discipline of overseeing ones thought processes.

As founder and director of the Lake County Summer of Peace 2012, Taira initiated and oversaw 100 programs over the 90-day festival that demonstrated individual and group expressions of peace throughout the county.  She also represented Lake County in the U. N. Celebration of Peace, and created markers for peace at both ends of the lake in Clearlake's Austin Park and Lakeport's Library Park.  She is a member of the Lakeport Economic Development Advisory Committee, and works toward county economic development through the Wellville program and the House of Living Rhythm.

Taira draws wisdom from a confluence of great thinkers and spiritual teachers history and her own study and practice of major religions, all of which teach in their various ways the love of the unspeakable love, power and energy of God and the responsibility of all beings for their own lives as reflections of the sacred.  She counsels her clients and classes the mandate of taking responsibility for everything that happens in their lives, or else risk turning their lives over to others who may have less opportunity, knowledge or intuition than they do, and helps people expand their own insight into their own reason for being and living according to their own mandates.  Taira's study and practice of the nature of life and the essence of individual and group soul and their unification is her purpose and unending work, as she consciously and unconsciously strives to act in the best interests of all people in the universe through conveying such ideas through her own creative endeavors, such as writing and producing.

Before becoming a therapist, Taira worked in communications and entertainment with public relations companies in New York, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles, where she wrote and produced educational videos for Fortune 100 companies.  Taira was a member of the White House Press Corps for eight years writing on the President, arms control and the federal budget during the Reagan administration; edited articles for the Foreign Service Journal to bring U.S. and world news through our State Department to U.S. embassies abroad; and published the 450-page U.S. Agricultural Policy Guide for the international commodities industry.

For further information, please visit Taira's website at:  TairaStJohn.com, or enjoy the guests in the Love and Awakening Series to The Taira St. John Show, which reflect similar ideas with similar unifying spiritual purposes.  You may listen to or download any guest interview on this by clicking on the  audio site button under the photo of the guest you wish to hear.

J. Fred Aement

[7] 09- 17-2014 - J. FRED ARMENT, FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF INTERNATIONAL CITIES OF PEACE, PRESENTS HIS NEW BOOK, "THE ECONOMICS OF PEACE: FREEDOM, THE GOLDEN RULE, AND BROADENING PROSPERITY."

J. Frederick Arment lives with his family and friends in Dayton, Ohio where he is Founding Director of the global organization International Cities of Peace. Arment's novels include the philosophical orphan's tale, "Backbeat: A Novel of Physics," and a political thriller, "The Synthesis." His nonfiction work, "The Elements of Peace: How Nonviolence Works," was released by McFarland Academic Publishers in 2012. McFarland will release his new work, "The Economics of Peace: Freedom, the Golden Rule, and Broadening Prosperity", in fall of 2014.

From the Arab Spring to the Occupy and Tea Party movements, the “What now?” solution to economic disparity and power politics has largely been unarticulated. This work details how the Golden Rule ethic and a technology-driven global consciousness are causing epic shifts in our economic and governing systems. The evolution from nation-state capitalism to a collaborative economy with judicial governance is proving that prosperity is compatible with peace. With ten case studies of successful “Golden Rule” organizations and an innovative study of the reciprocal ethic, The Economics of Peace provides accessible thought-provoking analysis of rapid worldwide change and forecasts a future of freedom, purpose and hope.

Sissa Harris

[10] 10-08-2014 - SISSA HARRIS M.A., TEACHES PSYCHOLOGY, SOCIOLOGY AND HUMAN SERVICES AT BOTH YUBA AND MENDOCINO COLLEGES.

* Sissa Harris, a graduate researcher in mid-life development was at Sonoma State University, received her degree in Depth Psychology in 2003.  The SSU Depth Psychology Department emphasized artistic process work.  Her dissertation focused on the artistic process of mask making and ritual space and her experience in liminal transitions during her research.  Sissa has a Bachelors Degree in Sociology.  She worked in Student Support Services at Yuba College Clear Lake Campus for 20 years.  Prior to that, she worked in a variety of Human Service programs.  Although she is mostly retired, she still teaches in her areas of expertise, she discusses the concept of liminality on the show.

According to Wikipedia, in anthropology, liminality (from the Latin word līmen, meaning "a threshold" is the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of rituals, when participants no longer hold their pre-ritual status but have not yet begun the transition to the status they will hold when the ritual is complete. During a ritual's liminal stage, participants "stand at the threshold" between their previous way of structuring their identity, time, or community, and a new way, which the ritual establishes. The idea of liminality can be applied to other phases of life when we are in one stage and about to start another, such as in a job, move or life transition (during marriage, child birth, separation, loss of a partner, etc.), when ones identity has left the old life patterns, but has not yet established or adapted to the new.  Sissa was actually in liminal space herself while she was in the process of writing her Master’s thesis, but had not yet achieved completion of her graduate status master in her education.

What are the liminal periods of life that you have experienced?

Growing up as an experienced, amateur naturalist, Mike hiked and biked in California’s coastal foothills and fished in its beautiful streams and rivers from an early age. Before it was fashionable Mike often commuted on bicycle. Automobilers from the mid-1970s remember the custom fabricated bumper-sticker mount on his bike saying,“Conserve Energy. Your Children Will Thank You!”

Some of his favorite personal moments as an Earthling include when he…

  • had birds perched calmly on his hand like a Ring-Necked Dove, an American Kestrel, a Red-Tailed Hawk or a Barn Owl. Mike held Federal and California falconry licenses.

  • saw first-hand the Chumash pictographs of Santa Barbara’s Painted Cave.

  • backpacked in California’s Sierra Nevada, camped in Sequoia National Park, or fished in King’s Canyon National Park.

  • stood on skis atop California’s June Mountain.

  • spoke at Federal Hearings about a liquefied natural gas terminal proposed for California’s Point Conception, near the Chumash Western Gate.

  • found that among the oldest living things known on Earth are the unassuming, elegant Creosote Bushes of the southwestern deserts in western North America – about 12,000 years old – exceeding even the venerable and romantic Bristlecone Pines.

  • realized that bacteria in permafrost are believed to be hundreds of millions of years old.

Austin is a  major consultant to the new House of Living Rhythm (HoLR), a community healing center, now located on the corner of First and Forbes; more information may be found on LinkedIn and on the House of Living Rhythm website.

Richard Stefanelloi

[14] 11-05-2014 -RICHARD STEFANELLO, A MAN OF GREAT FAITH AND UNDERSTANDING OF LIFE, TALKS ABOUT THE BEAUTY AND POVERTY OF HIS CHILDHOOD AND HIS LOVE OF MECHANICAL GENIUS, INCLUDING HIS OWN GO-CART...

Richard Stefanello has lived in Lake County twice, broken up by a long absence due to family needs.  He remembers Lake County when Lakeport was crowded with car and people every day, and the economy was bursting with energy, and wants to help Lake County restore its bountiful business climate.  And he also recalls the beauty of it then and now, which drew him back after years of being away in the military service and helping various family members and friends.

Today, he brings a profound faith and understanding of God and spiritual principals and spends a lot of his time in study and pondering of the sacred and worldly questions we have before us as a culture both sacred and profane.  He is particularly interested in bringing back the economy he once knew in Lake County, and has made suggestions about ways to bring capital back into the area through corporate and individual investments.

Michelle Scully

[15] 11-12-2014 -  MICHELLE SCULLY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY LAKESIDE CAMPUS, LIKES A GRAND VISION FROM HER LUCERNE CASTLE, AS LONG AS IT HAS HORSES, DOGS AND THE GREAT OUTDOORS!

* With her undergraduate degree in Zoology and her graduate degree in Biology, with an Ecology emphasis, Miclelle Scully was an Adjunct Instructor of Biology at Mendocino College, Lake Center Campus, for six years, which was a natural prelude to her selection as the Executive Director of Lake County's newest and only four-year college, Marymount California University, Lakeside Campus. Michelle admitted to kicking and screaming when she came to the area with her husband in 1995 to respond to his parents' invitation to join them in their pear packing and farming business.  But she soon became so involved in the community and its common goals, along with its people who won her heart  that she was pulled into true love for her mountain-lake home.

Michelle's love for the people of Lake was met by their love for her freshness and unique humor, and these new connections may have helped steer her from her dream of having a legitimate career with dogs and horses; for she loves the beauty of Lake County, and is intimately involved in its economic development throughout the area.  Her daily involvement with the young  students who ultimately enrolled at Marymount, and their fascinating stories, have further enhanced her natural love of people and being a student of life herself.

Michelle recently presided over the highly-successful all-county Business Summit, which she confessed has been called, "The Super Sexy Edgy Business Expo until wiser voices prevailed. It's no wonder that happiness is one of the major goals and mantras of Marymount, especialy on its Lakeside Campus.  Michelle would probably say, "How hard is that?"

"Once Upon A Christmas Card" Fairy Tale

[18] 12-03-2014 - LAKE COUNTY THEATRE COMPANY STARS  LARRY RICHARDSON AND DIANA SCHMIDT AND PRODUCER LIZ JACKSON TALK ABOUT "ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS CARD, AN ORIGINAL PLAY BY WRITER-DIRECTOR SUNA FLORES

* Leading actors, Larry Richardson (Horatio Hapless) and  Diana Schmidt (mother) discuss with Liz Jackson (who also plays Ralph - the delivery guy) the fun and highjinx of an original Christmas comedy  with a moral by Lake County Writer -Diretor Suna Flores.  With many outrageous characters, great lines and unexpected moments and moods in the show to satisfy the interests of a mixed audience of adults and children, Flores has done it again, and lived up to her recent honor of being named Star of Lake County Artist of the Year for 2014. Expectations were fulfilled!  Good Job!

Larry Richardson started dancing when he was nine years old, his mother and father taught him a lot, which really paid off in his theater performances. In 1996 he met his wife Zoe and they danced away 20 years. His first performance (2012) was in Healdsburg in the play, "To Kill a Mockingbird". Larry performed as a judge in LCTC's "Miracle on 34th Street", then as an intern in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"; next he performed as Tinkerbell  in "Peter Pan the Panto", and just wrapped up his performance in Monte Python's "Spamolot" as a dance. Currently, he is playing in "The Christmas Card" known as H, and frequently comments that it is his most challenging role, especially where he plays another small roll and has to switch off costumes as well as character. When not performing from time to time he helps his friends by performing in ads and commercials, where he and Taira worked together last year.

Diana Schmidt started acting at a very young age and has never stopped! "I am just a big ham and love performing!" she says. Since joining LCTC she has performed in a variety of productions, her favorites being: Cinderella  (ugly Step-sister), "A Christmas Carol in the Museum" (Spirit of Christmas Present), "Peter Pan the Pantos"  (Peter), "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (as the evil Nurse Ratched), and "The Odd Couple" (Female Version). She just wrapped up performing in Monte Python's "Spamalot". When not performing theater she is directing, choreographing and performing in the Chamber of Commerce's annual "Lip Sync" show and performing with New Vintage Productions in their annual "Speakeasy" show. Once in a while she can be found playing a part in a local "Murder Mystery".

Liz Jackson has worked on many LCTC productions; acting, producing, stage managing, props, set painting and advertising. Her most recent acting roleswas as Mrs. Mooney in "Flowers for Algernon, April 2014. "set painting is my favorite job" says Liz. "Keeps the creative juices flowing!".

* Denise Rushing, even at a young age, as she transplanted pumpkin seedlings into her Grandfather’s garden, collected rocks, and observed tree frogs in the woods behind her home, Denise found the planet's eco-systems enchanting.  She devoted her early career to environmental stewardship through science and technology--earning a degree in environmental engineering from Stanford University. Her career as an energy technology executive spans three decades and includes launching award winning energy efficiency and technology initiatives adopted by utilities around the world.  Business success notwithstanding, Denise recognized that humanity’s relationship with Earth’s living systems requires a deeper response. After earning her Masters Degree in Culture and Spirituality, she co-founded Rockhaven Ecospiritual Center, where she developed an ecologically-inspired approach to change management that she later documented in her book: Tending the Soul's Garden. In 2006, she was elected to public office in her local community and served two terms, where she was best known for her environmental advocacy and community revitalization efforts.  With a rich background in energy technology, ecological design, digital marketing, and business development, Denise Rushing helps innovators create sustainable business models, in keeping with their values. [23] 01-07-2015 - DENNIS PATRICK SLATTERY Ph.D., MASTER OF MYTHOLOGY, PSYCHOLOGY AND LITERATURE CONTINUES OUR CONVERSATION ABOUT "COHEARENT" LIVING BORN OF KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM FROM THE INSIDE OUT - PART 3.

Dennis Patrick Slattery Ph.D., has been teaching for 36 years, the last eight on the core faculty of Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpinteria, CA, a U.S. center and largest archival library for the teaching and practice of Depth Psychology, including the massive work of Carl Jung, James Hillman, and other leading analytical researchers, writing on analytical psychology .  His prolific works have crossed over so delicately

Pacifica Graduate Institute is an accredited, American graduate school in depth psychology, with two campuses located in Carpinteria, CA, near Santa Barbara, in Carpinteria, California,  founded in 1976. The mission of Pacifica Graduate Institute is to foster creative learning and research in the fields of psychology and mythological studies, framed in the traditions of depth psychology, based on the analytic work of Dr. Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist and colleague/follower of Freud until Jung more fully developed his own new theories of the unconcious and archetypal components of mind and human behavior  (largely out of his own conscious and  unconscious experiences that ironically were during his decade of recovery from the breakup between the two men (largely paternal/son) that both grieved tragically for years.  Jung's ideas, images and prolific writing have powerfully influenced the soul of the public through deeper understanding, language, literature and philosophical and physical (molecular) relationship of the individual and collective energy of mind and its patterns  James Hillman, Marian Woodman, Joseph Campbell and other analysts, for the  writers and researchers for psychological and spiritual truth.

Slattery has been instrumental in shaping the academic and imaginal literary,  mythological, poetic, and writing aspects of the Pacifica Graduate Institute's academic and imaginal thrust of its rich academic and imaginal program from the former rigid strictures of traditional psychology to the creative and disciplined depth of analytic and poetric understanding of the soul and its theories of development on deeper level.  Because of his kindness, discipline, student encouragement and prolific writing ry has also become one of the most beloved of the faculty of near genius capacity and output in various fields. Dennis Patric Slattery  can e reached by email at:  <DSlattery@pacifica.edu>

[25] 01-21-2015 - THOMAS MOORE IS THE AUTHOR OF THE BESTSELLING BOOK "CARE OF THE SOUL" AND FIFTEEN OTHER BOOKS ON DEEPENING SPIRITUALITY AND CULTIVATING SOUL IN EVERY ASPECT OF LIFE - PART 2

True to his Irish heritage, Thomas Moore has lived the genuine life of a writer, and has a large public following of his exploration into topics of the soul.  As a former monk, university professor, musician and professional mental health counselor, Moore has a wide understandsing of both the outer joys and challenges and the inner pangs and passions of the human psyche in all walks of life.  He describes his own life work as an "attempt to ground the pure, visionary spirit in the imperfect, intoxicating sensuousness of worldly life.”   His latest book, A Religion of One's Own is a reflection of this eclectic persuasion that gently, but courageously reaches into the yearnings of everyman with empathy, compassion and a lilting human empathy.  He writes and lectures throughout the world in the fields of  archetypal psychology, mythology, and imagination. As a frequent guest on the Taira St. John Show, this is his second recent interview, a followup this year of his introduction in December to help us understand his philosophy of A Religion of Ones Own and his response to his travels to Ireland and throughout the U.S. since last summer.  We also could not resist sneaking into his current work, about to be published this spring in a new perspective on  how to restore and maintain The Spark of Life: Finding Deep Joy and Optimism in an Age of Anxiety, which we will be able to discuss further with him on his next visit to The Taira St. John show on KPFZ 88.1. fm - 88.1 fm, when he is free this summer or fall.    Don't forget that you can listen or download his interview (or any other interview in this series) free of charge if you missed the live interview.

Michael Stone

[30] 02-25-2015 - MICHAEL STONE, LEADING NORTHERN CALIFORNIA TALK SHOW HOST WITH KVMR IN GRASS VALLEY, TEACHES SHAMANISM IN MEDICINE FOR THE EARTH

* As a superb broadcaster and interviewer of major spiritual leaders, cultural communicatorsand ocial engineers during our rapidly changing culture, Michael Stone is one of my heroes.  Since leaving the corporate speaking and training circuit, Michael has become a producer/host/broadcaster with KVMR, moderating an award-winning show called Conversations: Possibilities and Perspectives on local and global Issues.  His show is an authors' showcase that focuses on Environmental Restoration, Spiritual Fulfillment, Community Organizing, Health and Wellness and Social Justice Issues. He is also a journalist who contributes to  various publications, including his own e-newsletter, The Well of Light.

Amidst a renaissance of interest in Shamanism as a way of life, Shamanic Practitioners Michael Stone, Eve Crowe and J.P. Tindell are offering the Medicine for the Earth training in Grass Valley for the first time. Based on the work of Sandra Ingerman, international teacher of Contemporary Shamanism. Shamanism is the oldest human system of spiritual knowledge and healing dating back over 40,000 years. Almost all religions are based on ancient shamanic principles.

Shamanism is a path of direct revelation. By entering into an altered state of consciousness through listening to percussion, participants enter what Carlos Castaneda called non-ordinary reality. This is a way to bypass limiting beliefs, suspend cultural conditioning and tap into the wisdom of the ages. In this course you will learn how to do shamanic journeying, discover power animals and spirit guides and transform personal and environmental toxins.

The complexity of the contemporary environmental and social issues we are facing today cannot be solved with the linear thinking and problem solving skills of the past. We need a spiritual awakening to bring us back into alignment with each other and the web of life. Shamanism adheres to the ancient message that if we want to change the outer world of form we must first transform the inner world of mind and heart. Technology has given us many wonderful gifts and tools, but it has also ushered in an unprecedented culture of “nature deficit disorder”. If we are to fully appreciate the beauty and wonder of the world around us, we must first see and honor our own beauty within.

Medicine for the Earth is a three and a half day immersion into living a shamanic way of life. Shamans believe that all illness, both emotional and physical, is a result of soul loss. When we have some trauma in our lives it is believed that in order to protect ourselves a piece of our soul leaves the body. This is well known in Psychology and is called dissociation, but psychologists have no way of returning the lost parts. Shamans travel into an altered state of consciousness and track down where the soul fled to in the alternate realities and return it to the body of the client. Living a shamanic way of life means recognizing how our every thought, word and action shapes our world and impacts the web of life. It means learning to “walk in beauty” as they say in Native American cultures.

C. Richard Smith, Ph.D.

Michelle Scully

[41] 05-13-2015 - C. RICHARD SMITH, PH.D,PROFESSOR OF MANAGEMENT AND MICHELLE SCULLY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY - LAKESIDE CAMPUS, DISCUSS MANAGEMENT TRAINING AND CHALLENGES OF NEW BUSINESSES AND LARGE CORPORATE AND NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS

C. Richard Smith, Ph.D. is a professor of management at Marymount University - Lakeside Campus in Lucerne, CA, and has taught graduate business students for a decade.   He has written more than a dozen management syllabi that are being used to structure courses for university students.

Today's interview on the Taira St. John Show, Dr. Smith will be discussing the importance of academic business training, and the risks involved with or without university training.

Richard began his career as a U.S. Navy officer and helicopter pilot after graduating from Oregon State University.  After a five-year stint he returned to Oregon State University and completed a Masters Degree in Science Education and entered the teaching profession as a physical science instructor in San Jose.  Later, he held teaching positions in Santa Rosa and Ethiopia.

Richard entered the doctoral program at The University of Kansas and earned his PhD in Administration, wth a minor in Business.  Armed with this degree, he accepted the position of Superintendent of the Taipei American School in Taiwan, which he held for four years.  Returning to California, he served as an executive at Stanford University, leading to a position as Executive Director of a Washington, DC  research institute conducting economic research for the international banking industry.

Wanting to get back to the school business and California, Richard and a partner started an educational service company providing testing services for California K-12 schools.  Eventually, this led to a position as Vice President of Research and Planning for a major educational software development company located in San Diego.

After retiring from this position, Richard and his wife, Vicky, sailed their sloop from San Diego, through the Panama Canal to Maryland.  During this trip, Richard accepted an  adjunct professor position with Jones International University, writing and teaching distance learning graduate management courses.   After a decade of teaching for JIU, Richard accepted a teaching position with Marymount California University in the School of Business at its facility in Lucerne, California.   Richard and Vicky live in Kelseyville, California.

Michelle Scully - Executive Director - Marymount University - Lakeside Campus - Lakeport, CA.

With her undergraduate degree in Zoology and her graduate degree in Biology, with an Ecology emphasis, Michelle Scully was an Adjunct Instructor of Biology at Mendocino College, Lake Center Campus, in Lakeport, CA for six years, a natural prelude to her selection as the Executive Director of Lake County's newest and only four-year college, Marymount California University, Lakeside Campus. Michelle admitted to kicking and screaming when she came to the area with her husband in 1995 to respond to his parents' invitation to join them in their pear packing and farming business.  But she soon became so involved in the community and its common goals, along with its people who won her heart that she drawn into her own true love for her  new mountain-lake home.

Michelle's love for the people of Lake was met by their love for her freshness and unique humor, and these new connections may have helped steer her from her dream of having a legitimate career with dogs and horses; she loves the beauty of Lake County, and is intimately involved in its economic development throughout the area.

[44] 06-03-2015 - TAIRA ST. JOHN DISCUSSES WAYS TO MINIMIZE EVERYDAY WORK AND RELATIONSHIP STRESS IN OUR CULTURE

Taira St. John, Ph.D, MFT, is a Jungian depth psychotherapist in private practice in Lakeport, CA, who specializes in Anxiety and Depression.  Her work on anger and stress management has extended from daily career , relational and workday situational frustration to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), treating combat veterans and their families, especially related to readjustment issues to civilian life and male-female communications.

Stress is a common denominator in our culture, and the demand on all of us in a complex material society is to maintain our own emotional equilibrium in the face of personal, community, national and international crises.  Dr. St. John's experience over two decades in  counseling individuals and couples, managing family mediation in the Lake County Superior Court, and directing Alternatives to Violence (ATV) -- a 52-week rehabilitation program for male and female domestic violence offenders referred by the Courts and Probation have brought her into the psychological and soul work many people need to address to change their lives permanently.  Called "brain training," Dr. St. John emphasizes critical exercises people can use repeatedly to increase self-responsibility, insight and recognition of ones own vulnerabilities and choices, while simultaneously reducing anger and violence that can be life-changing at the critical moment of adrenalin flooding or losing control  or triggering or being triggered by anger, anxiety or trauma.
